Island context
West coast, Apollonia hills and northern cliffs.
Sifnos does a fine sunset, and unlike some islands it doesn’t make a circus of it — no jostling crowds or reserved-months-ahead terraces, just a handful of good west-facing spots where you can watch the light go soft over the Aegean with a drink in hand.
Here’s where we’d point you, depending on where you’re staying and whether you want a bar, a walk or a clifftop to yourself.
How to plan this experience
For an easy west-facing drink, head to Kamares bay — arrive 20–30 minutes before sunset and grab a table. For a panorama, try the western hills above Apollonia and Artemonas.
Want something special? A sunset boat charter with drinks in a quiet cove is hard to beat for couples. After dark, stroll the Steno for a nightcap.
A quick orientation
The classic sunsets are on the west coast — the side facing the open sea and the neighbouring islands — with Kamares bay the easiest to reach. The high inland villages and peaks give panoramic sunsets too, and the far north has a couple of dramatic clifftop options. (Sifnos’s most famous sunrise is at Chrysopigi on the east side — worth knowing if you’re chasing golden light.)
The best sunset spots
Kamares bay
The port town faces roughly west across its wide bay, which makes it the reliable, no-effort choice: a beachfront table or a bar on the slope above, the sun dropping into the sea beyond the harbour. Perfect for your arrival or departure evening. See Kamares beach.
The western hills above Apollonia & Artemonas
The ridge villages catch the last light beautifully. A rooftop or a west-facing terrace in Apollonia or Artemonas, or a spot on the road between them, gives you the sun setting over the folds of the island — convenient if you’re staying centrally and heading out for the evening afterwards.
Vroulidia & the north
Vroulidia, a small clifftop cove in the north, is known for exceptional sunset views over dramatic scenery — worth the drive if you want something more theatrical and less busy. Nearby Heronissos offers a quiet fishing-village dusk.
Profitis Ilias & high viewpoints
For the widest sunset of all, the island’s highest points repay the effort — the monastery slopes of Profitis Ilias, or any of the ridge chapels reached on foot, give a 360-degree Aegean panorama as the light fades. Combine with a late-afternoon hike.
Chrysopigi at dusk
While Chrysopigi is celebrated for sunrise, the monastery headland at dusk — the white church against a deepening sky — is quietly lovely and far less crowded than a sunrise crowd would suggest.
Sunset with a drink
If you’d rather toast the sunset than hike to it, the bars above Kamares bay and the west-facing cafés and rooftops of Apollonia are the easy picks. For something special, a sunset boat charter — drinks in a quiet cove as the sun goes down — is hard to beat for couples. See our Experiences hub for boat tours.
Tips for a good sunset
- Check the time and arrive early — sunset shifts through the season; give yourself 20–30 minutes and grab a table before it fills.
- West coast for the sea-sunset, high ground for the panorama.
- Bring a layer — it cools quickly once the sun’s down, especially uphill and in shoulder season.
- Pair it with dinner — many of the best spots roll straight into an evening meal; book if it’s a popular table. See our cuisine guide for where to eat.
Frequently asked questions
Kamares if you landed today and want the bay. The hills above Apollonia and Artemonas if you want the island under you. Vroulidia if you will drive north and sit on the cliff. There is no ticketed viewpoint.
The west coast looks at open water. It is not a reserved-seat circus. That is the point.
Bars above Kamares, and west-facing terraces in Apollonia. A short private boat if you already hired one. Do not expect a sunset menu on every beach.
Sunrise. The monastery faces east. Dusk there is quieter and still worth standing still. The photograph page is last light; this page is where the sun actually goes down.
Profitis Ilias if you walked it in the cool. Ridge chapels on the marked trails. Not a car park.
Car or taxi, then the path down. Leave time for the walk back in the dark. No taverna on the pebble. Water, shoes, a torch in the bag.
Kamares. You are already at the port. Walk the sand west. Apollonia can wait until you know the bus.
No. This is when the sun drops. That page is Chrysopigi at dawn, Kastro lanes, and the Steno at night.
