Island context
The island’s highest peak — 360° panorama and a classic hike.
The prophet Elijah, in the Greek Orthodox tradition, gets the mountaintops — and on Sifnos his monastery crowns the very highest point of the island. Profitis Ilias tou Psilou (“of the High”) stands on the central summit, reached on foot up an ancient path, rewarding the climb with a 360-degree panorama over the whole of Sifnos and the surrounding Cyclades.
Profitis Ilias rises at the centre of the island, its bare, wind-scoured summit visible from much of Sifnos. As the highest peak, it has always been a place apart — a hermitage and a landmark, its beacon-like position echoing the island’s ancient network of watchtowers.
How to plan this experience
The classic ascent starts from the Katavati / Apollonia side, following an old stone path up the mountain — a moderately demanding but well-marked walk. Wear proper footwear, carry plenty of water, and start early or late to avoid the midday heat. See hiking in Sifnos.
Consider the 19–20 July festival for the full mountaintop experience — one of the island’s big summer panigiria. See events.
The monastery
The monastery of Profitis Ilias is one of the oldest on Sifnos, of Byzantine origin, built in the fortified, inward-looking style of a mountain refuge. Though no longer an active monastic community, it opens for its feast and remains a revered site. See churches & monasteries.
The view
From the summit the whole island unfolds — villages, terraces, chapels and coastline — with the sea and the neighbouring islands ringed all around. Sunrise and sunset are spectacular. See best sunsets and photo spots.
The July festival
Profitis Ilias holds one of the island’s big panigiria on 19–20 July, when islanders climb the mountain for vespers, liturgy and celebration at the summit monastery. See events.
