Vathi sits in a sheltered, horseshoe-shaped bay on the island's south-west coast, ringed by hills that block most of the summer wind. At over a kilometre long, it's the second-largest beach on Sifnos, with warm, shallow water that makes it a genuine standout for families. The 17th-century chapel of Taxiarches and Evangelistria sits right at the water's edge, and Vathi's older identity as a village of working potters is still visible in the workshops along the shore — several remain active today, continuing techniques used here since before the Second World War. Locals date the paved road connecting Vathi to the rest of the island to around 2000; before that, the bay was reachable mainly by boat or on foot.

Vathi rewards a full, unhurried day rather than a quick stop: the wind-sheltered water suits everyone from young children wading at the shallow end to swimmers, kayakers, and paddleboarders further out, and a run of tavernas with tables right on the sand means there's no real need to leave once you've arrived. If you time it right, a rare protected wildflower — the sand lily — blooms along this stretch of coast in mid-August.

Swimming conditions and atmosphere

Vathi's horseshoe shape and surrounding hills make it the calmest, most wind-protected swimming spot on the island — a genuine advantage in July and August, when the Meltemi roughens more exposed coasts. The water is shallow enough near shore for small children, deepens gradually further out, and stays notably warm for Sifnos. Tamarisk trees along the back of the beach provide natural shade, and the calm conditions make this the best spot on the island for kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding, both available to rent locally.

Facilities

  • Sun loungers (through beachfront hotels and tavernas)
  • Several tavernas directly on the sand, including Manolis and Tsikali
  • Free parking
  • Outdoor showers — active pottery workshops along the shore, open to visitors

Nearby tavernas

  • Manolis — a long-standing waterfront taverna, tables right by the water
  • Tsikali — tables just a few metres from the sand, well known locally for its myzithra cheese and roast chicken
  • A handful of smaller tavernas and cafés along the beach for a casual coffee or lunch

How to reach Vathi

By car: about 25 minutes south-west of Apollonia (roughly 10 km), on a paved road with dramatic views down into the bay. By bus: 4 departures daily in summer, with reduced service off-season — check the current timetable before planning a day trip. On foot: an old donkey trail also connects Vathi to Apollonia, around 9 km and a full-day hike for well-prepared walkers, passing the Monastery of Fyrogia and the Agios Andreas archaeological site along the way.
