Where to Stay in Sifnos: Villages Compared
Where to stay in Sifnos: Apollonia or Kamares without a car, Platis Gialos for the beach, Kastro for silence, Vathi or Faros to switch off — villages compared.

Short answer
Where should I stay in Sifnos?
For a first trip, Apollonia if you want walkable dinners and buses, or Kamares if you want the ferry and a sandy bay on the same street. Platis Gialos if the holiday is a beach. Kastro if you have a car (or the patience for taxis) and care more about silence than a menu. Vathi or Faros if you actually want to switch off.
Sifnos has no resort strip. You pick a village, then live that village’s limits. One base is enough. Hotel-hopping wastes the week. Room types and the six village pages: where to stay.
Sifnos villages at a glance
Scan this first. The sections below keep the same order as the original comparison — capital, port, south beach, medieval village, then the two slow bays.
| Village | Best for | Beach | Car? | Evenings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apollonia | First visit, no-car | No — 10 min drive | Optional | Steno, late tables |
| Kamares | Arrival, families, short stays | Yes — long sand | Optional | Waterfront, quieter after dark |
| Platis Gialos | Beach-first, organised sand | Yes — longest | Helpful | Tavernas on the bay |
| Kastro | Couples, atmosphere | Seralia / Poulati below | Yes, or taxis | Almost none — that is the point |
| Vathi | Switching off | Yes — calm horseshoe | Yes | A handful of tavernas |
| Faros | Simple, three small beaches | Yes — three coves | Yes | Quiet harbour |
How to choose a Sifnos base
Ask two questions. Do you want to swim from the room, or eat and wander without a timetable? Those two lives rarely share a postcode on this island.
No car: Apollonia, or Kamares if the port beach is enough. A car: any of the six, with Kastro, Vathi, and Faros becoming actually usable. Families with small children usually want sand and a flatter street — Kamares or Platis Gialos, not Kastro’s stairs.
Cheronissos is a north-coast cove, not a first-stay base. Artemonas is Apollonia’s quieter twin, a walk away; treat it as the same hill, not a seventh decision. For a day-by-day plan once the bed is booked: Sifnos in 5 days.
Apollonia — for first-time visitors

The hilltop capital is the social and geographic centre of the island. Buses to every beach leave from the main square, the best dinner spots are within a five-minute walk, and the lanes of Steno come alive after dark. Pick Apollonia if it is your first trip and you do not want to commit to one beach.
Trade-off: no swimming on your doorstep — the closest beach is a ten-minute drive. In August the lanes are lively late; that is either the point or a reason to sleep in Artemonas, which is the same ridge with more mansions and fewer scooters. Walk it in twenty minutes. Stay pages: Apollonia and Artemonas.
This is the base that makes a car optional. You will still want a taxi for Chrysopigi at sunset when the last bus has gone. Practical bits: travel info.
Kamares — for ferry-friendly arrivals and families
The port village wraps around a wide sandy bay. You can walk off the boat straight into your hotel and into the sea. Shallow water, sunbeds, casual tavernas along the waterfront. Pick Kamares for short stays, families with small children, or if you want minimum logistics.
It is a real beach, not a leftover quay. Ferries still dock here, so you get some boat noise and a working-port afternoon. Evenings are quieter than Apollonia — fewer lanes to get lost in, more sky. West-facing, so the bay does a proper sunset. Guide: where to stay in Kamares. How you actually arrive: Athens to Sifnos ferries.
If your boat is late, this is the kindest first night. If you have five days and care about village walking, sleep here only the first or last night and put the middle in Apollonia or the south.
Platis Gialos — for beach-club energy

The longest organised beach on the island, with the highest concentration of boutique hotels (Verina Suites, Niriedes). Smart sunbeds, swim-up cocktails, modern Greek dinners. Pick Platis Gialos if you want a polished resort feel without leaving Sifnos.
You wake up next to the sand. You also live twenty minutes from Apollonia, and the “village” is mostly a beach road. Buses exist in high summer; they are not a substitute for a car if you want Vathi and Kastro on your own clock. Rooms and the bay: Platis Gialos stay guide. The beach itself: Platis Gialos beach.
In July–August, book the bed and the serious restaurants the same week you book the ferry. Omega 3 is not a walk-in. If the Meltemi is ugly, this south-facing bay is usually kinder than the north.
Kastro — for romance and silence

The medieval village on the east coast has only a handful of guesthouses inside the walls. Sea on three sides, marble lanes barely two metres wide, no cars, no nightlife. Pick Kastro for a quiet, atmospheric stay — couples, writers, repeat visitors.
Trade-off: you will need a car or scooter to get anywhere, and a suitcase with wheels is a bad joke on these steps. Swim below at Seralia or along to Poulati. Coffee with a vertical view, then accept that dinner options are few — that is not a failure of the village. Rooms: where to stay in Kastro. The lanes: Kastro village.
Book this one first if it is on the list at all. Two nights as a split with Apollonia is saner than a full week of luggage and stairs. Sunset at Chrysopigi is a short hop once you have wheels.
Vathi and Faros — for total slow-down

Two tiny southern bays, each with one small hotel cluster and three or four tavernas. Long sandy beach at Vathi, swimming-pool calm water at Faros. Pick these if you want to read a book for a week and forget what day it is.
Vathi sits in a horseshoe that used to be boat-only. That still shows: pottery workshops, a still bay, and not much else after dinner. The island’s main luxury cluster is here if that is your bracket; simpler rooms sit on the same sand. Faros is the old fishing harbour with three small beaches and the cheapest, plainest stays of the six. Trails leave from the water. Both need a car unless you enjoy watching the bus timetable like a ferry clock.
Do not pick Vathi because a list called it “romantic” and then expect Apollonia’s restaurants at 22:00. The point is the bay. If you might get restless, stay in Apollonia and day-trip south.
Do you need a car?
No, if you stay in Apollonia (or Artemonas) and use buses plus a couple of taxis. Kamares also works without a car if the port beach is your swimming. Yes, if Vathi, Faros, or a week in Kastro all have to happen on your timetable.
Buses cover Kamares–Apollonia–Platis Gialos well in high summer and much less well in the shoulder. Taxis exist and are finite; WhatsApp is how the island books them. Roads are steep and narrow. If you only drive in cities, stay on the bus grid. More in travel info.
One base or two?
One. The island is small enough that a well-chosen village covers the week. Split stays make sense only for Kastro: two nights in the walls, then Apollonia or a beach for the rest, so you are not dragging bags down marble every time you swim.
Five days is the default trip length. Do not change hotels on day three “to see more.” You will see the inside of a transfer instead. Month-by-month weather if you are still choosing a week: best time to visit Sifnos.
When to book
July–August: ferry, room, and the dinners you actually care about, as soon as the dates exist. Kastro’s handful of rooms disappear first. Shoulder months (late May–June, September) are kinder, but the good small hotels still fill.
Studios with a kitchenette are how a lot of the island actually sleeps — not a downgrade. Boutique mansions and villas exist if that is the trip; start from the hub’s hotel types, then open the village page, not a generic “best hotels in Greece” roundup.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the best place to stay in Sifnos?
There isn’t one. Apollonia is the best default for a first visit. Platis Gialos is the best if swimming is the holiday. Kastro is the best if atmosphere beats convenience. Match the village to the trip, not to a ranking.
Where to stay in Sifnos without a car?
Apollonia, with Artemonas as the quieter walkable alternative. Kamares if you want the port beach and simpler logistics. Skip Vathi and Faros as a sole base unless you like waiting for buses.
Is Apollonia or Platis Gialos better?
Apollonia for evenings, buses, and not tying yourself to one beach. Platis Gialos for sand outside the door and a more resort week. They solve different holidays.
Is Kamares a good place to stay?
Yes, for families, short stays, and awkward ferry times. The bay is genuinely swimmable. It is less of a village-night base than Apollonia.
Do I need a car if I stay in Kastro?
You need a car, a scooter, or a taxi budget. You cannot drive into the walls; you park and walk. Buses exist but will not run your romantic timetable.
Where should couples stay in Sifnos?
Kastro if you want the clifftop version and accept scarce rooms. Vathi if you want a still bay. Apollonia if you want to walk to dinner without planning the afternoon around a car.
Where should families stay in Sifnos?
Kamares or Platis Gialos: sand, shallower water, fewer stairs. Kastro is beautiful and a poor fit for buggies and nap schedules.
Should I split my stay between two villages?
Only for Kastro plus somewhere flatter. Otherwise one base. The island is small; packing twice is not a sightseeing strategy.
