Why Sifnos?
Two things: rich red clay in the hills around Vathi and Kamares, and a culture that turned pottery into the island's main export. By the 19th century, Sifnian potters were travelling the Aegean every summer to set up wheels in other islands' villages.
The signature piece — the mastelo
A wide, lidded clay pot used to slow-cook the Easter lamb dish of the same name. The shape traps moisture and concentrates flavour. Every Sifnian household has one.
Workshops to visit
Atsonios (Vathi) — the dean of Sifnian potters, fourth-generation, watches the wheel with a coffee. Lembesis (Kamares) — modern shapes, beautiful glazes, ships internationally. Aperathitis (Artemonas) — small studio with weekend wheel demos.
Take one home
A small skepastaria (chickpea pot) costs €25–€40 and packs into a suitcase wrapped in a t-shirt. It's the best souvenir the island sells.
